Episode VII

Star Wars: Episode 7 - What We Know So Far

finished, kaput, and ended.

But then along came Disney. In October 2012 the studio brokered a $4.05 billion deal to buy Lucasfilm, and with the deal came the announcement that they would be starting production on a whole new trilogy of Star Wars films that would keep the epic story going for years and years to come. Naturally, fanboys started to foam at the mouth with anticipation. What would the new movies be about? Would they bring back classic characters or merely focus on new ones? Would there be new stories set outside of the trilogy?

Thanks to all of these questions, we here at Cinema Blend have been sorting through all of the rumors trying to sort out exactly what we know about the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII, and we’ve constructed a handy guide to help sort out all of the facts and fictions. Read on below for the latest info!

Star Wars Episode VII start date
Start Date
On May 16, 2014, principal photography on Star Wars: Episode VII began, making it the first live-action Star Wars movie to go in front of cameras since Revenge of the Sith. While it hasn't been officially stated what is being shot first or where, some strategically placed sand on the production's first clapper board suggests that the cast and crew are kicking things off in the Abu Dhabi desert, where it's been rumored they have been building a new Tatooine. Most of the production, however, will be taking place at England's Pinewood Studios.

Star Wars Episode VII timeline
The Timeline
It has been confirmed that the Star Wars: Episode VII storyline will take place 30 years after the Battle of Endor and the events portrayed in Return of the Jedi. This makes complete sense, given that it’s been rumored that Abrams wants the plot of the film to revolve around Luke, Leia and Han from George Lucas’ original trilogy. In order to do this Episode VII, would need to factor in the age of the actual actors, and it appears that’s exactly what’s being done.

Star Wars Episode VII director JJ Abrams
The Director
Though he initially declined the job, J.J. Abrams is not only going to be the director ofStar Wars: Episode VII, but also one of the co-writers. The filmmaker has had plenty of experience working in science-fiction, directing both the last two Star Trek movies as well as the Spielberg-esque Super 8, and has long said that he is a life-long Star Warsfan. Will that experience and fanhood lead to a great sequel? We’ll just have to wait and find out.

star wars Screenwriter
The Screenplay
Oscar winning screenwriter Michael Arndt was one of the first people to be hired to work on Star Wars: Episode VII, signing a deal to pen the script for the film only about a week after the film was first announced. But not only is he now gone, it would appear that his script in the hands of Abrams and Empire Strikes Back screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan has changed quite a bit. According to reports, Arndt’s original Star Wars: Episode VII screenplay largely followed the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo’s offspring, but since Abrams and Kasdan have taken over they have reportedly changed the focus of the story to be more on the original trilogy characters. Whether or not this story is accurate is unknown, but what has been confirmed is that the screenplay is finished.

But what about the cast? Who's in it? The full cast has been officially announced. Read on to find out who the stars of the next Star Wars are...

Luke Skywalker
Luke Skywalker
Since Star Wars Episode VII was announced, every fan has asked the same question: "Does this mean we’ll see the return of Luke Skywalker?" It has been confirmed that the answer is not only yes, but that he will once again be played by Mark Hamill. Other than the fact that he is 30 years older, we really have no idea what Luke will be doing in the sequel, but Hamill has suggested that the character could end up being an influential character like Obi-Wan Kenobi. Whether that’s what Abrams and Kasdan have planned is unknown at this time.

Princess Leia
Princess Leia
You didn’t really think that the folks behind Star Wars: Episode VII would be splitting up the twins again, did you? In the same announcement of Mark Hamill’s return, it is also confirmed that Carrie Fisher will be back as Princess Leia in J.J. Abrams’ sequel. Fisher has been laughing about the idea of wearing her classic cinnamon bun hairstyle again – this time with white hair - but the ultimate truth is that we really have no idea what role she will be playing in the movie.

Han Solo
Han Solo
While Harrison Ford did show some reticence a few months back when asked about whether he would be interested in coming back for Star Wars: Episode VII, apparently something eventually convinced him. The legendary star has signed on for the epic sci-fi sequel, meaning that we will soon get to see Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo all back on the big screen together. What hasn’t been officially announced is the character’s role in the plot, but if rumors are to be believed he will be playing a "gigantic role."

Episode VII stories aren’t the only ones swirling around the rogue smuggler, however. In addition to being back for at least Star Wars: Episode VII, there has also been some heavy suggestion that one of the in-development solo films could center around a young Han Solo and his adventures flying through space with Chewbacca. Whether or not that will actually happen is anybody’s guess.

Chewbacca
Chewbacca
If Han Solo came back for Star Wars: Episode VII and Chewbacca didn’t, then I could guarantee that there would be riots in the streets. Thankfully, this is not a reality that any of us will have to deal with, as Chewbacca – like many of his other original trilogy co-stars - has been confirmed to return for the J.J. Abrams’ directed seventh chapter. Peter Mayhew, the 7’3" British star who starred in Episodes IV through VI as well asEpisode III, will be wearing the Wookie costume once again for the movie, keeping the spirit of the original trilogy alive.

R2-D2
R2-D2
Representing for all of the droids out there, R2-D2 will definitely be in the next chapter of the Star Wars saga and was actually the first character to be confirmed to return. This news shouldn’t surprise all of the die-hard fans out there, as he is one of only four characters who have been in every movie in the franchise. Lee Towersey and Oliver Steeples, members of the R2-D2 Builders Club, are building the new R2-D2, and it has been confirmed that Kenny Baker – who has been inside the little droid for all six features so far – will be back as well.

C-3PO
C-3PO
You didn’t really think that they were going to include R2-D2 in Star Wars: Episode VIIand not C-3PO, did you? The characters have one of the greatest love-hate relationships ever portrayed in cinema, and it would just be cruel to fans to separate them this late in the game. Fortunately, it has been confirmed that Anthony Daniels will be back to play everyone’s favorite protocol droid. How he has changed over the last 30 years is still up for speculation. Will he still have the universe’s biggest stick up his ass, or has the end of the Empire allowed him to relax a little bit? We’ll just have to wait and find out.

Star Wars Episode VII Adam Driver
Adam Driver
We’ve focused a lot on the heroes who will show up in Star Wars: Episode VII, but let’s also take a quick peek at the possible dark side of the force. Months before Disney and LucasFilm made the casting official, trade reports said that Adam Driver was being lined up to play the central antagonist in the blockbuster production. Now the casting has been confirmed, but we still don’t know what team he will be playing for in the movie. Is he going to exemplify the return of the Sith, or maybe even the Empire? We’ll have to wait and see.

Star Wars Episode VII's Other New Characters
Other New Characters
As part of a big reveal, Star Wars: Episode VII announced its primary cast on April 29, 2014 and in addition to Driver and the returning original cast members, the movie will also include John Boyega, Daisy Ridley (pictured above), Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson and cinema legend Max von Sydow. Serkis, Gleeson and von Sydow are all familiar names, but Ridley and Boyega are fresher faces. John Boyega made a name for himself starring in the critically-acclaimed alien invasion flick Attack the Block, while Daisy Ridley is way more of a newcomer . She has been working in British television, appearing on shows like Mr. Selfridge with Jeremy Piven. She's also set to appear in an upcoming UK –made horror movie called Scrawl, which has been in post-production since last year.

But that’s not all. It has also been officially announced that Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o and Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie are set to be in Star Wars: Episode VIIas well. Just like all of the other newcomers to the franchise, their specific roles have not yet been revealed.

There was a point when practically every notable actor in Hollywood had gone out for parts in the film, but the names above appear to be the chosen few who will actually be going to a galaxy far, far away. Actor Jesse Plemmons was once said to be a frontrunner for a major part, but didn't make the final cast. Other actors who were considered included Downton Abbey co-star Ed Speleers and theater actors Matthew James Thomas and Ray Fisher (who it looks like will be playing Cyborg in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice).
